URBAN LAND ART - a concept for a park in Finland

Land Art in the urban environment

URBAN LAND ART - a concept sketches for a land fill
"The flag": an elliptical island with a junction of esplanades - a concept for a park as an urban land art project in Kajaani, Finland.

to not design, but create a park

There are of course innumerable ways to go about designing a park; but it is not my aim to design a park; because for me "designing" means making something functional, pleasing, beautiful or at least acceptable. But this is not enough; I want to make a strong statement - something which involves you before you can passively start letting your framework of reference please you. You must be overwhelmed with something unknown and new; only after that you must feel the need to access and review your available points of reference - or even create new ones.

The blue cross - of course - is a reference to the Finnish flag; on the ground one wouldn't notice anything more than a bluish surface - unless one knew it. But that's the exciting part. Art does not have to be seen in order to exist. The obvious - but nothing more - is never art. It will get its meaning for the one, who takes off from Kajaani airport, sits on the correct side of the plane and looks down at the right moment. The sketch on the left would only be a kilometer long esplanade in the water - leading from nowhere to nowhere. Would walking on it be a mind boggling experience - or a disappointing one? Tell me and I'll tell you. Every solution has its problem. People are different in their extremes - if they have them. Average is mediocre. I'm saving this idea for later. >>
