MAQUETTES and MODELS

wood, coffee and painted zinc

an urban maquette

This scale model and maquette of the location was made from mainly chipboard and the models for the sculptural elements are painted zinc. To distinguish the street from the sidewalk, I stained that area with coffee.

On maquettes on a 1:100 or 1:200 scale, I like to show the scale as compared to human size by using model train figures. In this case, I wanted to have my sculpture not be too small. So I chose to make it 1:50. This is twice as big as the 1:100 scale I use normally; and I find that the figures or model cars would become much to prominent. Therefore I suggested the human size in abstracted wooden figures. In that way they blend in with the material of the maquette itself, and the sculpture stands out more.
