travels and journeys by the sculptor Lucien den Arend - inspirationsthe foothills

When I was in the States during the autumn of 2006, my old high school friend Donna and I visited Sequoia National Park; even though I had lived in California during my youth, Iwas never able to see these magnificent treees with my own eyes. Before my parents and I emigrated from Holland to the United States, our sponsor gave me a View Master with a set of disks. One of them was about the giant Sequoias. I was fascinated by these 3D! pictures; but it took more that half a century for me to get the opportunity to visit them.

Below the Sequoia National Park, near Three Rivers, the Kings River flows between green pastures and oak (Quercus chrysolepis and Quercus wislizenii). The Sierra Nevada Mountains, in the background, are covered with clouds which provide the necessary daily moisture for the Giant Sequoia to survive.
