When, in the colonial period, Spanish explorers reached the Rio Grande from the south, they found two mountain ranges rising out of the desert with a deep chasm between. This area became settled and, on both sides of the Rio Grande, the cities Ciudad Juárez on the south or right bank of the Rio Grande and El Paso, on the North side, grew.
