SCULPTOR AT WORK

sculptor at work in his first (open air) studio in 1968
A young sculptor working on discoid form I

This was my first commission in 1968. I had installed a small presentation of some of my sculptures in the office of Dicke Architects, on the Bomkade in Dordrecht. The municipal department of architecture - the city architect - had seen these works which resulted in my first order. I was to make a proposal for a sculpture in the entrance hall of the Dordrecht drinking water plant and pumping station. At that time I was still living with my parents. In the back of my father's den Arend Gallery and frame shop there was a tiny courtyard - three and a half meters wide. I annexed that as my first sculpture studio. There I welded the frame for my sculpture's armature and blew numerous fuses. it was already the middle of autumn and getting cold.

This sculpture was all about the hole, resulting from twisting its circular contour from the plane of the larger curved form. This was a perfect place to sit for working.
