Ede my site specific sculptures revisited (Lucien den Arend)
The wall as a long object with presence.
In the originally planned situation the cars were parked nearer to the wall, which had regular openings breaking its length. i found that it was more interesting to show its length by keeping it as one plane and stressing its presence by giving it a pronounced color.
The natural stone steps bring you up to a secondary level which is fifty centimeters lower than the actual street level in order to keep the height of the red wall low enough for the inhabitants the see over. In the original plans - from before I was commissioned to make my proposal - the wall was a brick one which was one meter ten centimeters above street level. The solution I proposed was the present situation, where the descent to the quay was three steps shorter, and the view from the homes was sixty percent better.
