A8 viaduct Zaanstad

Rijkswaterstaat (of the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management) in The Netherlands, the city of Zaanstad and the Praktijkbureau of the Ministry of Culture initiated the realization of art in relation the Dutch national highway network. One of the first projects took place in Zaanstad.

The circular contour of the connection of the two cylinders of the previous sculpture has be magnified and inverted in this variation

Here the sculptor has decided that diverting the attention from a negative experience in this more or less underground environment, to a monumental shape which seems to have outgrown its home under the bridge - a concept not very different from this highway barging its way through a rustic village street. The flat circle segments with their connection and continuing contour line were almost what the sculptor envisioned, were it not that they would have been too inviting to youthful people to climb the surfaces. But the idea of two wings in the shape of a 'V', seeming to cut the viaduct between its scissors was strong.
