SCULPTOR AT WORK

My first willow project was to be realized in the garden of the Dordrecht Municipal Museum; an exhibition of ten young Dordrecht artists was being organized in its new wing Waarheid en Vrede. The artists were asked if we had any ideas to realize something in the large old garden in front of the museum. I proposed to make a growing willow piece. Colleague Kees de Witt Wijn and I were the only ones proposing projects outside. I also proposed to buy the old tea-garden furniture from the tea-garden Eyckendonck in Dubbeldam and install a tea-garden next to Waarheid en Vrede where we could organize the opening reception. The proposals were accepted and we helped each other to construct our works in the garden. Forty years later the museum was renovated and a restaurant and tea-garden were added on the same location.
We got my willow branches from two of the old willows along a dike leading to the Ottersluis on the south tip of Dordrecht Island.
