LAND ART

pollarded willows and geometry

LAND ART between Maasdam and Westmaas, Holland - pollarded willows and ultramarine tempera.
"dance macabre" - Ritselaarsdijk near Zwanegat, Binnenmaas, Holland - pollarded willows and ultramarine tempera paint.

Ultramarine is my prefered blue as it is for me a natural color. I the landscape it does not act as a signal color but still attracts attention, which I find is the main task of art; without being a focal point- for at least a moment - how can it provoke thought?

And as was to be expected, a farmer with a scythe over his shoulder called to me from his bicycle: "Why are you ruining these trees?" I walked up the dyke towards him and explained that the owner of this land gave his permission and that this was part of a temporary art project. While we were having a constructive discussion on art in general a car stopped next to us and through his opened window the driver expressed his disapproval of my work, the farmer explained to him what it was and implied, thus all I had to do was to agree with him. So in the end all three of us were satisfied with the result of our short meeting on top of that dyke.

The ultramarine shapes on the willows faded in time as was expected.
"dance macabre" - The ultramarine shapes on the willows faded in time as was expected.

After six months I showed a friend the results of our exhibition/symposium. The ultramarine had faded and in the months after that the last remnants of the paint disappeared. I did not take any pictures then so with Photoshop I tried to match my memory of what we saw; it was actually a little more chalky than on the image here.
