A8 viaduct Zaanstad

Rijkswaterstaat (of the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management) in The Netherlands, the city of Zaanstad and the Praktijkbureau of the Ministry of Culture initiated the realization of art in relation the Dutch national highway network. One of the first projects took place in Zaanstad.

Lucien den Arend concluded his three previous variations with this construction. The two circle segments were reconnected in the 'V' shape as an interpretation of the bow of a ship. many ships pas by this location on the Zaan River. When this proposal was accepted, the twenty two meter long circle segments were transported to this spot by ship from Rotterdam where the were made. With his sculpture 'Victory' he put the finger on a sore of the town of Zaanstad.

Fifteen years later the Mayor of Zaanstad, Ruud Vreeman who is known for his lack of appreciation for contemporary art, had the sculpture removed.
