the Onwaardse Dike is a historic element in the cultural landscape around
Dirksland - the functional necessity of it has been replaced by a visual
one - just digging through it and rounding off the ends would have ignored
its importance, as it would have lost its justification for being there -
raising the S47 (now N215) would certainly have eradicated its subtle silhouette
