Vrijthof

the city of Maastricht organized an open competition in 1971 - Lucien den Arend developed an environment on the former parking area - the seemingly horizontal Vrijthof Square actually slopes downwards from the Saint Servaes Church and the Saint John on the left - downwards with a difference of about one meter - the trapezoid shaped water plane was to be 50cm below the surface on the west side and 50cm above the pavement on the east side - giving the impression of being slanted

the competition was won by a Maastricht architect
