I found a site which gives a lot of information on the subject of favicons - http://www.chami.com/ - They gave permission to use their favicon generator from www.denarend.com. So here it is - you browse to an image (usually from your own computer) and click the generate favicon button. Then follow the instructions on the results page which give you a preview of your favicon.
I suggest making your own favicon 16x16 pixels and be sure to keep it crisp and clear. Any line thinner than 2 pixels will virtually not show.
You can also generate your own favicon by first downloading http://www.irfanview.com/. Open the program, browse to your image and save it as a .ico file, naming it favicon.ico for instance. Then you copy and paste this saved favicon into the folder containing the pages with which you want it to shown in the address bar - and make sure to let these pages pick it up. So drop this HTML tag between the <head> and </head> tags: <link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" > that's all.
