In the summer of 1997 the exhibition of Finnish art was organized in the Open Air Museum Drecht Banks Sculpture Park (OPAM) by Lucien den Arend. His attempts to realize this exhibition - in fact - lead to his founding of the sculpture park itself. Later that summer three of the Finnish artists who had participated in the exhibition, Jorma Hautala, Kari Huhtamo, and Matti Peltokangas, met Lucien den Arend in Helsinki and together they visited Hvitträsk.
Hvitträsk was built in 1901-1903, by three architects, Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren and Eliel Saarinen as an architectural office and cultural home.
