CITIES - sculptures and land art
Rotterdam - Groot IJsselmonde
The garden's reference to the environmental theme was so strong that the presence of a human element - an artifact - would give the effect which I had envisioned. This became his first monolinear form - a six meter diameter lemniscate with projections of the symbol for infinity. The lemniscate is a returning theme in the work of the sculptor. This was his very first large sculpture, made by hand on a hydraulic press at a Rotterdam shipyard, Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij. The stainless steel pipe - three inches in diameter - was filled with resin and - inch for inch - hydraulically forced into its shape according to a life sized copper pipe model which I had made. It was manufactured in the large submarine construction hall of Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij. In this immense hangar-like space monolinear seemed very small.
