CITIES - sculptures and land art

EL PASO

Sculpture for a roundabout in El Paso, Texas. Site specific sculpture for the city.
Sculpture for the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) roundabout in El Paso - photomontage © Lucien den Arend.

At the UTEP - the University of Texas - in El Paso - a roundabout was planned in 2010, and artists were asked to send documentation of realized sculptures in the public space. I was selected with three other sculptors to present individual proposals.

Taking the wishes of the advisory committee of the University of Texas at El Paso into account, I proposed a sculpture which would have an optimal effect from the viewpoint of a moving vehicle - changing views of various geometric shapes. Their point of departure was that the traffic circle would not be a place for pedestrians. A sculpture with interesting detail, which invites the viewer to approach the sculpture, was thus out of the question. So it was all about the moving viewpoint - turning about the traffic circle - the roundabout.
