CITIES - sculptures and land art

Katwijk aan Zee

Katwijk aan Zee Holland - sculptures (site specific and public sculpture) in cities in Europe and America by Lucien den Arend - his site specific sculptures in the city of Katwijk aan Zee
1988 - surf - stainless steel - 450x260x450cm - entrance area public swimming pool - Katwijk aan Zee NL

The city of Katwijk aan Zee is located on the coast of Holland. It has it's North Sea beaches. When the city commissioned me to make a sculpture for the new Katwijk public swimming pool, I made walks on the windy beach where the waves inspired me to make a sculpture that was actually different from my other work. The material and the technique are the same, but the way of constructing the sculpture has more affinity with the reality of the existing visual world than with the reality of the geometric abstract process of designing and constructing my work.
