CITIES - sculptures and land art

Hoorn

The new state comprehensive school (RSG Hoorn) was built on the location of a former horticulture school. Most plants had been removed for the demolition and building activities. On the location on the photograph some exotic trees were saved. As is usual in the Netherlands the level of the grounds had to be raised. To protect the roots this space had to remain at the old level. Therefore, after having been commissioned to make a proposal, I suggested making a twenty meter footbridge connecting the area in front of the main building with the parking lot and the physical education buildings. The 20 meter long footbridge was constructed in Rotterdam has just been lifted into place. Besides its function to keep the soil around the trees from being trampled, it helps make this spot the focal point of the surrounding area.

The red footbridge element has just been installed in Hoorn Holland.

The following pages show how this piece of urban land art evolved up to 2010. As I sometimes check Google earth satellite images, I am now to understand that the red bridge has been removed, as well as most of the poplar tree screens - and that the whole area has now been paved. So much for consulting with the artist.
