Goeree-Overflakkee
designs from a sculptural point of view for Highway S47 (now N215) on
Goeree Overflakkee - 1984/1990
The department of construction of the Province of Zuid-Holland NL, commissioned Lucien den Arend to make proposals for a section of highway S47 (now N215) bypassing the towns Dirksland, Sommelsdijk and Middelharnis on the former island of Goeree-Overflakkee in the south-western corner of Holland. The delta works have made a peninsula of the island which Goeree Overflakkee used to be.
The Poplar Screens, the Dirksland bridge, the Sommelsdijk noise barriers and convex passages are the sculptural elements which the sculptor Lucien den Arend had proposed in 1984 were accepted and executed. The bridge was the last element which was finished.
