CITIES - sculptures and land art

Dordrecht|Merwelanden

My vision for the symposium centered on engaging directly with the Dutch delta landscape, using organic materials native to the wetlands. The chosen site, situated on the outer edge of the dike, embodied the rhythm of the tides—a dynamic environment where osier cultivation thrives. Here, willow branches are planted sporadically in the silt-rich soil, harvested every three to four years to produce flexible rods. Beyond their use in basketry and crafting, these rods are woven into mats to fortify dikes and shorelines, a centuries-old practice that binds human ingenuity to the land’s mutable contours. The process creates a landscape of pollarded stumps and unruly shoots, their organic chaos shaped by both human hands and natural forces.
