CITIES - sculptures and land art
Zwijndrecht Discoid Form 3
The city of Zwijndrecht bought this large bronze from Lucien den Arend in the early seventies. It was installed in front of the town hall.
Discoid form 3 1973-2008/9 bronze - Ø180x80cm - Zwijndrecht NL (in storage?)
When the town hall of Zwijndrecht was finally restored in it's original state and the rather unsightly additions from the seventies were removed and replaced by a new wing, which respected the original Delft School architecture, a certain Marinke Steenhuis was hired to advise Zwijndrecht about the new situation, her advice was that the town remove the contemporary sculptures from around the town hall. She even went so far as to call my 2.2.3D.2.. sculpture an "unsightly steel construction (wanstaltige staalconstructie)". It was installed on another location in the OPAM Sculpture Park in the center of Holland. My bronze sculpture Dicoid Form 3 was moved away and deposited on the yard of the public works department. There it lay as a 'reclinig figure' - just like I had stored it in my studio between exhibitions. It was there that it inspired the composer Henk Klop to dedicate a part of his composition six pièces pour saxophones et orgue (six pieces for saxophones and organ) which premiered in the St. Bavo Cathedral in Haarlem, the Netherlands - also during the seventies.
