CITIES - sculptures and land art
Zwijndrecht
Realized in 1973, the Walburg Project is a prime example of
early site-specific land art in the Netherlands. The work
functions by framing and amplifying the existing environment.
Its forms—a rolling earthwork and a central sculptural
element—are not simply placed in the landscape; they are
extensions of it.
The sculpture creates a dialogue
between the straight drainage ditch, the vast sky, and the
imposing lines of the electricity pylons. It invites the
observer to experience the location anew, to perceive the subtle
relationships between water, land, and infrastructure. The
functional aspect is its very existence as a place for
contemplation—a defined space where one becomes aware of the
annual solar cycle and the permanent, human-made forces that
shape our environment. It is a permanent mark that makes the
hidden rhythms of the place visible and tangible.
