CITIES - sculptures and land art

Lelystad

Sketches for land art in Lelystad, Holland - sculptures (site specific and public sculpture) in cities in Europe and America by Lucien den Arend - his site specific sculptures ordered by the city of Lelystad

1985|1986 four sketches for the land art project on the location of the test circuit and test center of the national Road and Transport Department of The Netherlands - Lelystad NL

The area encompassed by the crescent serves for measuring sound levels of vehicles. My task was to work with 17,000 cubic meters of Zuiderzee earth. I explored some possibilities which appealed to me. One was a high cone in the flat Dutch landscape. It could be seen from every part of the Flevopolder. Another idea was inspired by the furrows made by the plow, which also resembles the ripples in the sand near the seaside. That would have been a visually strong idea; but the maintenance was also to be taken into account. And maintenance of art is not one of the strong points of the Dutch mentality.
