CITIES - sculptures and land art
Volgerlanden|Walburg project
proposal
1971|1973 -1999|2001 earth, grass, meandering dike, bronze, asphalt, high-tension pylon, cross islands - salix alba - alnus - Zuid-Holland NL
Adjoining Lucien den Arend's Walburg landscape project , an open space was projected in the Volgerlanden housing area which was to be built. The southern strip (Zuidvoeg) was to be comprised of a row of islands with housing on them.
The idea was to make a pond on the location. Originally the planners proposed to have the pond extend into Zwijndrecht covering the area where Walburg Project was situated. Upon discovering the existence of this work the planners decided to ask Lucien den Arend to make a proposal for an enlarged land art project.
Den Arend stayed true to his original concept and decided to use indigenous materials. Characteristic elements, materials and features of the Dutch landscape.
