CITIES - sculptures and land art

Dordrecht

In 1972 I participated in the exhibition Tien Jonge Dordtse Kunstenaars at the Dordrecht Municipal Museum. Instead of placing a sculpture in the garden, I proposed creating one by planting twenty-four willow rods in a circle. The material came from pollard willows on the southern side of the Island of Dordrecht. After planting the cuttings I painted identical white bands on the lower parts of the stems, emphasizing the geometry of the circle and recalling the white markings I remembered from roadside trees in the Netherlands shortly after the war.
