CITIES - sculptures and land art

Apeldoorn

The city of Apeldoorn commissioned me to make a proposal for a sculpture to be placed on the playground of a new elementary school. One of the teachers worked with the students on a project about changing shadows, observing and photographing them at different times of day.

About twenty-five years later I happened to be in Apeldoorn and visited the site. What had once been a large open area had turned into a dense network of narrow streets. The whole neighbourhood was wooded, and it was difficult to recognise the original location. The school had been expanded, and the sculpture had been moved to a position in front of the building. It now stands on a small mound and is, in fact, rather detached from the architecture.
