LAND ART - public lecture at zlgevents courtyard - Kuala Lumpur environmental sculpture - willow maze island in Hardinxveld/Giessendam the Netherlands

In the wetlands along the river Nieuwe Merwede in Holland there are many osiers. In 1991 the Merwelanden nature reserve in Dordrecht was chosen for the location of a symposium in which Bulgarian and Dutch sculptors participated.

Griend-cultuur (osier-culture) was the title of this Dordrecht manifestation. I had been planning a sculpture symposium in which natural material found in the Dutch tidal wetlands with its specific plants and other natural material could be used by the sculptors.

I chose this location, on the outer side of the dike. The tide comes and goes making the osier culture possible. It is all about the branches and twigs which are used for many purposes. The willows are grown by sticking a branch into the earth at random distances. The pollard willows are cut every three or four years depending on what thickness is needed. The visual effect is a very organic one.
