SCULPTURES UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Pollarding the willows of the PieterJanszoon Saenredam project in Barendrecht, Holland.
Pieter Janszoon Saenredam project

The cultivation of the osiers in the tidal areas of the Netherlands - wetlands since long before history was written - inspired the sculptor to combine his geometrical approach to his sculpture with the living environment of the old landscapes of the lowlands of the Rhine-Meuse delta. The osier landscape is not an evolution from floodbasin to forest; when the willows are pollarded regularly their shapes evolve, but the overall situation remains constant. Its gestalt is revitalized in cycles, the symbolic configuration or pattern of elements being unified as a whole so that that its properties cannot be derived from a simple summation of its parts.
