The celebration of Saenredam's 400th birthday was on June 9, 1997 with the performance by ballet dancers. On this day and every twelve and a half years after that the willow trunks are to be whitewashed, evoking the white church interiors which he depicted. By choosing a cycle of twelve and a half years, every other time the white interior will be either in the summer or in the winter when the knots of the willows will have no leaves - as well as the chance of snow, adding to the effect of the whiteness.
