By pollarding the willows every three years their typical knots will appear and grow larger in time. I planned the undergrowth to be butterbur (Petasitis) with its dark green large leaves. This underlines the fact that the island is not accessible and can only be viewed from the shore. I wanted to give it a mystical character making it only possible for the spectator to wonder about the interior of the tree structure. In time the knots of the willows will almost touch, creating vaults resembling the churches Saenredam depicted in his paintings.
