Concrete Sculpture
Public Art at Marconiplein station in Rotterdam: a concrete sculpture

the selected positioning.
Marconiplein is in fact largely
characterized by lampposts, traffic signs and tram tracks with overhead
lines. It had to be in the first place an object that detaches itself
from such obstacles. The existing network of linear structures was for
den Arend a reason for choosing for a large mass. And this he cerrtainly
succeeded: the sculpture consists of three locally produced square
concrete sheets with sides of 7.5 meters and a thickness of 20
centimeters. The panels each weigh 28,000 kilograms. To support the
sculpture three piles were driven on which a triangular concrete slab
was poured. In February, the sculpture was assembled in a single day
with the aid of two cranes. The three connections were accomplished by
means of five threaded rods with a diameter of thirty millimeters. The
space around the rod ends was injected. As a whole the image now stands
loose on its foundation, the three base points resting against a
stainless steel angular stop block.
Betonplastiek
Kunsttoepassing bij het station Marconiplein in Rotterdam: een betonplastiek van Lucien den Arend. De vorm van het beeld is logisch 'voortgekomen uit de gekozen situering. Het Marconiplein wordt namelijk in belangrijke mate gekenmerkt door lichtmasten, verkeersborden en trambanen met bovenleidingen. Het moest dus in de eerste plaats een object worden dat zich losmaakt van dergelijke obstakels. Het bestaande netwerk van lineaire structuren was voor den Arend reden om voor grote massa te kiezen. En dat is beslist gelukt: de plastiek bestaat uit drie ter plaatse vervaardigde vierkante betonnen platen met zijden van 7.5 meter en een dikte van 20 centimeter. De platen wegen per stuk 28000 kilogram. Om het beeld te funderen zijn drie palen geheid waarop een driehoekige betonplaat is gestort. In februari werd het beeld met behulp van twee kranen in één dag geassembleerd. De drie verbindingen werden tot stand gebracht door middel van vijf draadeinden met een diameter van dertig millimeter. De ruimte rondom de draadeinden werd geïnjecteerd. Als één geheel staat het beeld nu los op zijn fundering, de drie voetpunten rustend tegen een roestvrijstalen hoekvormige aanslag.
