Weymouth RR

environmental thoughts

A new road through a traditional English rural landscape presents a number of problems which can be solved responsibly. Approaching this from an artist's point of view will give unexpected results.

earth sound barrier - artistic interventions - proposals for Highway A15

To the west of Tiel I proposed an earthen noise barrier. The meander was my way of introducing contrast into the horizontal and linear quality of the Dutch landscape. The curving inwards and outwards - away from and towards the motorists - should give a welcome change of perception of the otherwise uniform landscape.

Since the Dutch landscape needs constant drainage, ditches are a necessity. Therefore I projected this ditch as part of the meander. It would be a visual accent strengthening the sculptural shape of the dyke. At the same time it would form an obstacle for wandering younger, and older, children.
