Arie Wols

Arie Wols - Dutch painter 1945-1998.

French landscape - oil on canvas by Arie Wols - Dutch painter 1945-1998 - 100x80cm.

I've known Arie from when we were in our early twenties until his untimely death in 1998. His parents tried to discourage him from becoming, and later being, an artist. He lived in a kind of medieval house, which was going to be demolished, along the dike in Heerjansdam. One time, when he was young, I was part of a delegation of an advisory committee in Dordrecht, Holland when he applied for an art scheme. He was officially living with his parents, so we also visited him there. His mother whispered to me "can't you advise him to choose another profession." I didn't and he was later accepted. He died when he was only fifty three. His widow Annemiek asked me to design his gravestone.

Wols Arie was born September 22, 1945 on the Lagendijk in Ridderkerk. His training as a painter he successively followed the Technical School in Ridderkerk, later the Art Academy in Rotterdam. He developed his undeniable talent, by his constant and intensive study of various techniques and he experimented with materials and styles. His impressive and diverse in oeuvre, his style and materials testifies to that fact. In 1964 Arie Wols moved into in an old house on the main street in Heerjansdam. When this house was demolished, he moved to another studio in Heerjansdam, next to the pumping plant, on the border with Barendrecht. There - he had a magnificent view over the river Waal. Exhibitions of his work have been organized in e.a. Zierikzee, Delft, The Hague, Papendrecht, Zwijndrecht, Dordrecht and Leerdam. From 1987 he lived and worked in a building on the Damstraat In Oostendam, again overlooking the Waal - from the other end of this river. Although much work of Arie Wols in possession of Dutch collectors, it is also represented in collections in Germany, Belgium, Australia, England and Canada.

In 2003 a documentary was made about Arie and his work.
