CITIES - sculptures and land art
Papendrecht
Site specific sculpture is usually made specifically for a given location - a site. But one can argue whether a sculpture made to fit in with its new site, and the site scaled to the sculpture - that is the exact spot determined with the scale in mind, cannot be considered a site specific sculpture.
1985/2008 - 2.2.3d.2. steel sculpture by Lucien den Arend in OPAM - Sculpture Park Drecht Banks (location Papendrecht NL)
Some will say that a sculpture, made for a specific location, cannot be moved to a new location without loosing its identity; I say that when a sculpture can't be relocated and keep its power to make a statement, it is not art. This specific sculpture was made for the new situation of the city hall of Zwijndrecht, Holland. The sculpture was scaled to the location and complemented the Delft School architecture of the old town hall. In 2008 this old town hall was preserved and restored to its original specifications, and the 'new' additions, which did not respect the delicate old building, were removed. Separated from the historic building, a new city hall was built which complements the older building.
