Pieter Janszoon Saenredam Project
In 1997 the trunks of the willows were painted white with lime. This was to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the birth of Pieter Janszoon Saenredam. At the same time this was the first time the trunks were white, for after this date they would be whitewashed every twelve and a half years. This results in once on the actual birthday - June 9 1697 - and every other time on December 9. The reason for the whitewashing is to evoke images of Dutch churches from the time when Saenredam did paintings of their interiors.
