Haarlem

Sculptures in public places often relate to architecture and human scale. A third aspect is movement. The Dutch city of Haarlem commissioned Lucien den Arend to design a sculpture for the Europaweg, one of the arteries leading from the center. The location was fixed - although a few years later the city moved the sculpture a few hundred meters along the axis of the Europaweg.

The sculptor went along with the movement of the traffic in two directions by alternating a spiral movement around the axis of the road from right to left and back again.
